Clear Lake

Clear Lake is the Bay Area heart. NASA, hurricane country, lake-side homes.

The Clear Lake area is the heart of Houston's Bay Area — NASA Johnson Space Center, Nassau Bay, El Lago, Seabrook, Taylor Lake Village, and the dense corridor of homes ringing the lake itself. Housing spans 1960s-70s ranch homes built for the original NASA workforce, 1990s-2000s subdivisions farther inland, townhome and condo communities along NASA Road 1, and premium waterfront properties on Clear Lake and Taylor Lake.

The defining factor for Clear Lake roofing is hurricane wind exposure. Hurricane Ike in 2008 hit hard. Harvey 2017 added flood damage. Beryl 2024 brought more wind damage. Roofs in Clear Lake need 6-nail patterns, impact-rated underlayment, hurricane straps, and properly anchored ridge vents — all standard for us.

The other factor is Galveston County jurisdiction. Clear Lake requires Texas Department of Insurance windstorm certification (WPI-8) on most structural work. We handle the WPI-8 paperwork in-house — without it, your homeowner insurance won’t cover wind damage in storms.

TDI windstorm certification: Galveston County requires WPI-8 windstorm certification on most roof replacements. We handle the inspection and paperwork in-house — no third-party delays.

Local conditions

Hurricane wind, salt, NASA-area density. Three factors that shape the build.

Hurricane wind exposure. Clear Lake faces direct Gulf hurricane exposure. Six-nail patterns, hurricane straps, and impact-rated underlayment are essential. Class 4 impact-rated shingles strongly recommended.

Galveston County jurisdiction. Different building dept, separate permit fees, different inspection schedules from Harris County. WPI-8 windstorm certification required on most structural work.

Salt air corrosion. Clear Lake adjacency means humidity and some salt drift. Galvanized flashings need closer inspection over time; stainless or copper recommended for waterfront properties.

Hail belt edge. Clear Lake is at the southern edge of the eastern Texas hail belt. Hail events less frequent than Katy or Sugar Land but still happen. Class 4 still pays back through hurricane wind benefits alone.
