Houston roof cost calculator.

Quick estimate based on square footage, material, complexity, and tear-off layers. Updated in real-time as you adjust inputs. Final quote requires inspection.

2,500 sq ft
Roof area (not house footprint). Most Houston single-family homes are 1,800-4,500 sq ft of roof.
Asphalt is the Houston default. Class 4 adds insurance discount. Tile, slate, metal extend life significantly.
More slopes, dormers, valleys, and penetrations increase labor cost.
Houston code requires full tear-off (no install over). More layers = more labor and disposal cost.
Higher roofs need more setup time, equipment, and safety provisions.
Estimated typical project cost
$13,750
Range: $11,800$15,800
Tear-off & disposal $1,250
Decking inspection / replacement $650
Underlayment & ice/water shield $1,100
Material (shingles, accessories) $6,250
Labor & installation $3,800
Permits & misc $700
Typical total $13,750
This is an estimate. Actual project cost depends on decking condition (only billed for what’s replaced), HOA requirements, code-required upgrades discovered during tear-off, and material market pricing. We provide a real line-itemed quote for free after a site inspection.
How this estimate works

What’s in the math.

Material costs are based on current Houston market pricing (mid-2026) for installed roofing systems. Architectural asphalt runs $4-$7 per sq ft installed; Class 4 adds $1-$2 per sq ft; metal $11-$18; tile $12-$32; slate $25-$50.

Tear-off cost scales with layers. Houston code requires full tear-off (no install-over). Single-layer tear-off is the most common; 2-3 layer homes are usually older Heights, Bellaire, or Memorial homes that have been re-roofed multiple times.

Complexity multiplier reflects labor variance. A simple gable roof with one pitch installs significantly faster than a custom estate with multiple slopes, dormers, and copper accents. The simple-to-estate range is roughly 0.85x to 1.25x the base labor cost.

What this calculator doesn’t capture: deck rot extent (only known after tear-off), specific HOA requirements (some require premium materials), code-required ventilation upgrades, structural reinforcement (for tile or slate retrofits), and specific accessories beyond standard scope. The estimate is a starting point, not a final quote.
